Abstract
Carbon monoxide poisoning, particularly in Korea, is one of the most serious and important problems of public health because anthracite coal briquette is widely used as the main domestic fuel and always has a possibility of causing dangerous accident of acute and chronic poisoning. The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes of the peripheral blood picture in acute carbon monoxide poisoning. The 562 patients with acute CO poisoning have been evacuated to the emergency room of Han Yang University Hospital from May 1972 to July 1977. The 185 cases were selected for analysis because they were completely examined for peripheral blood. The RBC and WBC count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, ESR, WBC differential count, MCV, MCH and MCHC examination were performed in peripheral blood. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. The mean of RBC count is 4.64 million/cu mm in male and 4.60 million/cu mm in female which are within normal limit. 2. The mean of hemoglobin is 14.3 gm/dl in male and 13. 5 gm/dl in female which are within normal limit, but it is increased in proportion to the serum concentration of HbCO. 3. The mean of hematocrit is 44.4% in male and 39.6% in female which are within normal limit, but it is increased in proportion to the serum concentration of HbCO. 4. The mean of ESR is 11. 4 mm/hr in male and 18.8 mm/hr in female which are above normal limit. There is no proportional increment with the serum concentration of HbCO. 5. The mean of total WBC count is 13,394/cu mm which is above normal limit, and it is increased in proportion to concentration of HbCO. 6. The mean percent of segmented neutrophil is 72%, stab neutrophil 7%, lymphocyte 17.4% monocyte 2%, eosinophil 0.7% and basophil 0.43% 7. The mean of MCV is 92.0 Cu ?, MCH 31.4 ¥ì¥ìgm and MCHC 33.2%.
